Onam Special: Wheat Rava Payasam

Wheat Rava Payasam/Gothambu Rava Payasam/ Gothumai Rava Payasam
Onam Special: Dedicated to my cousins

This time stayed away from usual Ada Pradhaman, Kadala Pradhaman and Semiya Payasam and tried wheat rava payasam. Credit goes to amma for the valuable tips and MIL who grated coconut for milk and watched the show.
Ingredients:
Wheat rava – 1 cup
Moong dal/ cherupayar parippu/pasi parippu – 1/3 cup
Jaggery – 500 gm
Coconut milk – Milk from 2, medium sized coconuts
Sago/javvarisi – a hand full
Coconut bits sliced – 1 tbsp
Cashew nuts – 10
Raisins – 10
Cardamom – 5 pods/ ¼ tsp powder
Ghee- 3- 5 tbsp

Method: How to get coconut milk, melted jaggery and for tempering http://www.achuscook.in/2014/05/ada-pradhaman.html

In action for the special item of the day:
Dry roast wheat rava and moong dal separately on medium heat. Clean well and Pressure cook wheat rava and moong dal with 2 cups of water. Add a tsp of ghee to it to prevent cooked rava and dal sticking at the bottom of pressure cooker.

Heat 2-4 tbsp of ghee in a thick bottomed pan/ uruli and add the cooked wheat rava and dal. Mix them slowly allowing ghee to be absorbed. Add melted jaggery and mix it slowly for few minutes until jaggery and the cooked mix goes sticky to each other. Add sago/javvarisi to it.

Now it’s time to add coconut milk.

Add the 2nd milk - Cook on medium flame. Keep on stirring slowly until it thickens to a mushy paste.

Reduce the flame or else rava can get easily stick to the bottom of the vessel. Add 1st milk to it with cardamom powder.

Switch off the flame and add fried cashews and raisins - Do not cook after adding the 1st milk.

Tasty payasam is ready.
